## Key points

- Instagram lets one person add several profiles and stay logged in to up to 10 accounts at once. You do not need a proxy for that.
- No Instagram or Meta page we read sets a number of accounts per IP address. The fixed per-IP limits in proxy guides come without a source.
- Platforms ban what you do with an account: fake identities, new accounts after a ban, automated sign-ups, fake engagement and networks of accounts.
- A proxy helps real accounts with three jobs: one fixed location per account, a look at your page from another country, and research on public pages.
- Use your normal connection for Fanvue. Its terms forbid accounts controlled by automated means and sharing your login.

You do not need a proxy for multiple Instagram accounts. Instagram lets one person add several profiles and stay logged in to up to 10 accounts at once. A proxy helps with a few honest jobs: one fixed location for an account you share, a look at your page from another country, and public research. It never makes a forbidden account allowed.

This article is for people who run an AI persona on Instagram, TikTok or X, often with more than one account. Everything about the rules comes from the platforms' own pages, read on 6 October 2026.

## Do you need a proxy for multiple Instagram accounts?

No, not to have them. Several accounts per person are allowed on Instagram, TikTok and X, and all three say so.

> "When you add multiple Instagram accounts, you can switch between them without having to log out and log back in." "You can create additional profiles for the same Instagram account." "Keep in mind that you can have up to 10 accounts logged in at one time."
>
> — Source: Instagram Help — Add and switch between multiple Instagram profiles, read 2026-10-06 — https://help.instagram.com/1696686240613595

> "You can have multiple accounts—for example, for fan content or creative expression—but not to deceive others or break the rules."
>
> — Source: TikTok Community Guidelines — Integrity and Authenticity, read 2026-10-06 — https://www.tiktok.com/safety/en/policies-and-engagement/integrity-authenticity

> X "allows users to create and/or operate up to ten (10) accounts for different, non-duplicative purposes." Allowed examples include "accounts for personal projects, hobbies/interests, or for your business(es)" and controlling "multiple accounts on behalf of a third-party (e.g. “Social Media Managers”), provided that no violations of X Rules (including this policy) occurs".

So two persona accounts on one phone, both run by you, are normal. Many proxy guides say otherwise. Most of them sell proxies, and the limits they quote are not on any platform page we found.

## What Instagram, TikTok and X allow, and what they ban

The platforms allow several real accounts. They ban accounts that lie about who runs them, accounts that come back after a ban, accounts made by software, and accounts that fake popularity.

> To use Instagram, "We must not have previously disabled your account for violation of law or any of our policies." "You don't have to disclose your identity on Instagram, but you must provide us with accurate and up to date information (including registration information)". You may not create accounts "in an automated way without our express permission", may not "buy, sell, or transfer any aspect of your account" or "solicit, collect, or use login credentials or badges of other users", and may not "circumvent, by-pass, or override any technological measures that control or limit access to the Service or data." Effective 1 January 2025.

> — Source: Instagram Help — Terms of Use, read 2026-10-06 — https://help.instagram.com/581066165581870

> Meta may restrict or disable accounts "Owned by the same person or entity as an account that has been disabled", accounts "Created or repurposed to evade a previous account or entity removal, including those assessed to have common ownership and content as previously removed accounts", and accounts with "Close linkage with a network of accounts or other entities that violate or evade our policies". It also lists "Creating or using an account or other entity through automated means, such as scripting".

> "We don't allow people to misrepresent themselves on our services, use fake accounts, artificially boost the popularity of content, or engage in behaviors designed to enable other violations under our Community Standards."
>
> — Source: Meta Transparency Center — Inauthentic Behavior, read 2026-10-06 — https://transparency.meta.com/policies/community-standards/inauthentic-behavior/

TikTok and X say the same about ban evasion and automation.

> "We strictly prohibit automation tools, scripts, or other tricks designed to bypass our systems." "If your account is restricted or banned, you may not create or use another account to get around it." For deceptive account behaviour TikTok may "Ban additional or new accounts you create". Released 25 August 2026, effective 24 September 2026.
>
> — Source: TikTok Community Guidelines — Integrity and Authenticity, read 2026-10-06 — https://www.tiktok.com/safety/en/policies-and-engagement/integrity-authenticity

> You may not "create, operate, or mass-register accounts that are not legitimate". Ban evasion includes "creating new accounts", "imitating a suspended account to replace it", "repurposing an already-existing account" and "having someone else operate an account on your behalf". X may also suspend "any other account we believe the same account holder or entity may be operating in violation of our earlier suspension".

_Figure: What Instagram, TikTok and X allow and forbid for people who run several accounts, from their terms and guidelines read on 6 October 2026. None of the bans on the left changes with the IP address._

**Not allowed, with or without a proxy**

- A new account after one of yours was banned or disabled _(ban evasion)_
- Accounts created by a script or a bot _(automated sign-up)_
- False sign-up details, or posing as a real person _(inaccurate information)_
- Your accounts liking and boosting each other _(fake engagement)_
- Bought, sold or borrowed accounts and logins _(account trading)_
- Getting round a block or a limit _(circumvention)_

**Allowed**

- Several accounts of your own, each with its own purpose _(up to 10 on Instagram and X)_
- A persona account labelled as AI, signed up with your true details _(accurate information)_
- Switching between your accounts in one app _(built in)_
- A social media manager running accounts for a client _(X names it)_
- Posting your own original work at a human pace _(no automation)_

Your persona is an invented character, and that is fine. The rules are about who runs the account and how. Sign up with your own true details, and switch on the AI label: [Instagram's AI-generated profile label](https://aiofmcity.com/blog/instagram-ai-generated-profile-label) shows where.

### What the sources do not say: Finding an Instagram or Meta rule that limits how many accounts may use one IP address

Several pages that rank for this search say Instagram limits how many accounts may use one IP address, often to about five. We looked for that rule. On 6 October 2026 we read the Instagram Terms of Use, Meta's Account Integrity and Inauthentic Behaviour policies, and the Instagram help pages on adding profiles and on login activity.

None of them names a limit per IP address, and none mentions proxies or VPNs. The only number is 10 accounts logged in at one time, on one help page. The guides that quote a per-IP limit did not link to an Instagram page for it.

You can check this yourself. Open the pages linked above and search each one for "IP", "proxy" and "VPN".

## What a proxy is, in plain words

A proxy is a computer that visits websites for you. Instagram sees the proxy's internet address and its location, not yours. Proxies differ in where the address comes from and how long you keep it.

| Type | Where the address comes from | Good for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| ISP proxy | An internet provider, held in a data centre. Usually static | One fixed location for logins |
| Residential proxy | Home internet connections. Usually rotating, sometimes fixed for a while | Looking at public pages from many places |
| Datacenter proxy | A server company. The address belongs to a server, not a home | Research on public websites |

**Static** means you keep the same address every time. **Rotating** means the address changes, per request or every few minutes. For logging in to a real account you want static, so your login activity shows one place instead of many.

A proxy is not a VPN, but for this question they behave alike. Both change the address a website sees. A VPN usually sends all your traffic through it, a proxy only the apps or browser profile you set up.

## When a proxy helps an AI influencer operator

A proxy helps when you want an account's logins to look the way they really are: one person or one small team, in one place. It does not help an account that breaks the rules above.

_Figure: Common reasons to use a proxy for persona accounts, and whether it helps. Based on the platform rules quoted in this article._

**What do you want the proxy for?**

- My assistant logs in from another country → **Helps, with care:** One static address in your country for that account only. Better still: shared access, so the assistant never needs your password.
- See my profile or link page from abroad → **Helps:** Open your page through a proxy in that country and check what visitors see. No login needed.
- Check search results or prices in another market → **Helps:** Look at public pages by hand, as a visitor from that country.
- Keep work browsing apart from private browsing → **Helps a little:** A separate browser profile does most of this. A proxy adds a separate address.
- Make a new account after a ban → **Do not:** Ban evasion on Instagram, TikTok and X. The new account can be banned too.
- Run bots, mass follows or many sign-ups → **Do not:** Automated sign-ups and fake engagement are banned whatever the address.
- Log in to Fanvue → **Do not:** Use your normal connection. Fanvue forbids accounts controlled by automated means.

### One fixed location for an account you share

Instagram shows every login with its device and location, and asks you to confirm the ones it does not recognise.

> "You can view a list of devices that have recently logged into your Instagram account at any time. If you don’t recognize a recent login, you can log out of that location or device and let us know that the login wasn’t you." In Login Activity: "If you recognize the login, click This Was Me".
>
> — Source: Instagram Help — View your recent Instagram login activity, read 2026-10-06 — https://help.instagram.com/2761108904184084

If you live in Germany and your assistant posts from the Philippines, your account logs in from two countries every day. Your login activity then shows two countries, which makes a login you do not recognise harder to spot. A static proxy in your country, used only for that account, keeps the logins in one place.

The cleaner fix is access without a password. The Terms forbid using other users' login credentials, so the safest setup gives the assistant their own access. Where Meta One is available, [Meta One Advanced gives shared access to up to 4 people](https://aiofmcity.com/blog/ai-influencer-verified-instagram), and [AI OFM agency or solo](https://aiofmcity.com/blog/ai-ofm-agency-vs-solo) explains why the login stays with you.

### See your page the way people abroad see it

Your audience is often in another country. A proxy there lets you open your profile, your link page and your landing page as a visitor from that country. You see whether a link works, whether a page loads and what a first-time visitor sees. You do not log in for this, so there is nothing for the platform to confuse.

### Research on public pages

Search results, prices and what other creators post differ by country. Through a proxy you can look at them as a visitor in that market, by hand. Do not collect data from Instagram with software. Its Terms forbid "accessing or collecting information in an automated way without our express permission", even when you are logged in.

### Which proxy for which job

For the shared account, take one static ISP or residential address in your own country. Use it only in the browser profile for that account, and do not switch countries. For checking pages and research, a rotating residential proxy is fine, because you never log in.

Our partner Shift Proxies sells residential, mobile and ISP proxies, including static mobile lines (as listed on its website on 6 October 2026). Whichever provider you use, use it only for the jobs in this article.

## Where proxies get accounts banned anyway

A proxy changes the address. The rules are about what you do with the account, so a proxy does not protect an account that breaks them. These are the usual ways people lose accounts while using one.

1. **A new account after a ban.** Meta disables accounts created to evade a removal, including ones it judges to have "common ownership and content" with the old one. A new address does not hide the same face, captions and links.
2. **Rotating addresses on a login.** Your login activity fills with places you have never been, which is hard to tell apart from a stolen account. Use one static address per account, or none.
3. **Bots and automation behind the proxy.** Automated sign-ups, mass follows and scripted likes are banned on all three platforms. The address does not matter.
4. **Your accounts boosting each other.** Accounts that like, comment and share each other's posts can look like a network of fake accounts. Meta and X both ban that, whatever the addresses are.
5. **A cheap shared proxy.** You do not know who used the address before you. Pick a paid, dedicated address for any account you log in to.

If an account has already been restricted, a proxy is not the fix. Read what the platform says first: [Instagram AI influencer banned?](https://aiofmcity.com/blog/instagram-ai-influencer-banned-appeal) and [TikTok AI account banned?](https://aiofmcity.com/blog/tiktok-ai-account-banned) explain the appeal paths.

## Do not use a proxy or VPN for Fanvue

Log in to Fanvue on your normal connection. Fanvue checks your identity, pays you, and has its own rules for logins and helpers.

> Updated 21 September 2026. "When you create an Account you must not: Impersonate another individual; Create ‘bot’ Accounts or any Account which is controlled by other automated means; Share your password or give access to your Account to others; or Transfer or otherwise assign your Account to anyone else."
>
> — Source: Fanvue Legal — General Terms & Conditions, read 2026-10-06 — https://legal.fanvue.com/terms-conditions

Fanvue's terms do not mention proxies. We still keep them out of it. Your Fanvue account is tied to your verified identity and your payouts, and nothing in it gets better from a different address. If someone answers messages for you, give them access through Fanvue's own manager and team accounts, never your password. [Fanvue verification](https://aiofmcity.com/blog/fanvue-verification-kyc) explains the identity check.

## How to set up one fixed location for a shared account

1. **Try access without a password first.** If your assistant can work through shared access, you may not need a proxy at all.
2. **Buy one static address per shared account**, in the country where you live.
3. **Create a separate browser profile for that account.** Set the proxy only in that profile, and use it for nothing else.
4. **Log in yourself first through the proxy**, and confirm the login as "This Was Me" if Instagram asks.
5. **Turn on two-factor authentication**, so a stolen password alone cannot open the account.
6. **Check login activity once a week.** Every login should show the same place. Log out anything you do not recognise.
7. **Give each persona its own content and its own login.** [Running several personas](https://aiofmcity.com/guides/risk-bans-and-recovery#running-several-personas-what-links-your-accounts) explains why, and why separation is never a way to hide from a ban.

If you want a provider for step 2, Shift Proxies is our partner and sells static ISP proxies. A proxy is optional. The labelled persona, your own original posts and a human pace are what keep an account safe.

## Frequently asked

### Do I need a proxy for multiple Instagram accounts?

Usually not. Instagram lets one person add several profiles and stay logged in to up to 10 accounts at once, from the same phone or computer. A proxy only helps with a few jobs, such as giving a shared account one fixed location or seeing your page as people in another country see it.

### How many Instagram accounts can I run from one IP address?

Instagram publishes no limit per IP address. We read the Terms of Use, Meta's account integrity and inauthentic behaviour rules and the help pages on profiles and logins, and none gives a number. The only number Instagram publishes is that you can be logged in to up to 10 accounts at one time.

### Is using a proxy against Instagram's terms?

The Terms of Use do not mention proxies. They forbid what people often use proxies for: getting round technical measures that limit access, creating accounts in an automated way, giving inaccurate information, and using Instagram after Instagram disabled your account. A proxy used for any of these breaks the rules.

### Can I make a new account with a proxy after a ban?

No. Meta disables accounts created or repurposed to evade an earlier removal. TikTok says you may not create or use another account to get around a restriction or ban, and X lists creating new accounts as ban evasion. A different IP address does not change that.

### Should I use a proxy or VPN for Fanvue?

No. Log in to Fanvue on your normal connection. Its General Terms forbid accounts controlled by automated means and sharing your login. If someone helps you with messages, give them access through Fanvue's own manager and team accounts.

### Which type of proxy is best for social media accounts?

For logging in to a real account, a static proxy, so the address stays the same every time. ISP proxies are static addresses from an internet provider. Rotating residential proxies change the address and suit looking at public pages from many places, not logins.
