# Reddit for an AI persona: what gets accounts banned

AI persona promotion on Reddit: there is no 90/10 rule and no site-wide AI label. Reddit bans AI content posing as human and hunts coordinated accounts.

## Key points

- The "90/10 self-promotion rule" is not a documented Reddit policy. A long search found only third-party blogs that repeat it.
- Reddit allows AI content site-wide. Each subreddit sets its own rules on top.
- One thing is banned on all of Reddit: AI content that presents itself as human-generated.
- There is no platform-wide AI label. Where a label is required, you write it in your own words.
- Reddit’s 2026 detection work targets several accounts that act together. It does not target promotional ratios.

Reddit allows AI-generated content. It bans one thing on the whole platform: AI content that presents itself as human-made. Everything else is decided by each subreddit, including how much self-promotion is accepted. This article shows what Reddit says, what it does not say, and what it has started to look for. Our strategy is to run your own operator account and the persona account as two separate jobs. [Traffic and platform policy](https://aiofmcity.com/guides/traffic-and-platform-policy#reddit-is-two-different-jobs) explains it.

## What Reddit says about AI content

> Reddit permits AI-generated content, subject to each community's specific rules. The prohibition that applies platform-wide is AI content that "presents itself as human-generated." There is no platform-wide AI label, toggle or flag — disclosure, where a community wants it, happens in the post itself: a tag in the title, a flair, or a line in the body.

Reddit works differently from Instagram, which labels the account, and TikTok, which labels each video. Reddit leaves the rules to the community you post in. It keeps one rule for itself: do not pretend a generated persona is a real human. A persona account that says what it is, wherever it posts, follows that rule everywhere on Reddit. Whether it also follows the *subreddit's* rules is a separate question, and the answer is different in every subreddit. No summary of "Reddit's rules" can answer it for you. To stay within the rules, read the sidebar of the community you want to post in.

## Reddit has no official 90/10 self-promotion rule

Ask around and you will hear a specific number: make nine useful posts for every promotional one, or Reddit bans you. So many marketing blogs call it "the 90/10 rule" that it sounds official.

### What the sources do not say: Looking for Reddit's own statement of a numeric self-promotion ratio

Before repeating "90/10", the first step was to find where Reddit says it. Reddit does not say it. It is not in the Manipulated Content policy above, and a long search found it in no other document published by Reddit. Every source that repeats the number is a third-party marketing or SEO blog. Several are dated 2026. None cites a Reddit document for it.

The ratio looks like folklore. The community watched what gets removed and made a rough rule of thumb from it. Over time that became a "rule" that nobody at Reddit wrote down. So this article states what Reddit's own document says (moderators decide, community by community) and gives no number that cannot be sourced.

The rule of thumb still points at something real. There is just no number for it. How much self-promotion a subreddit accepts depends on whether people see you as part of the community or as someone who only uses it. Moderators make that call in each subreddit, so it is enforced unevenly. You cannot stay safe by hitting a ratio, because there is no ratio.

## Reddit now looks for accounts that act together

> Reddit reports blocking 23 million spam views a day and catching roughly 25,000 new spam posts and comments daily, a 20% reduction in user exposure to spam in the most recent quarter it reported. It says it uses LLMs specifically to catch "the highly subtle, coordinated patterns of fake behavior" that earlier systems missed — checking for suspicious signals from the moment an account is created.

This describes your real risk much better than any promotional ratio. "Coordinated patterns" fits the setup many persona operators run. One account posts persona content. A second account, or several, upvotes it, comments on it or promotes it. The accounts are created in a similar way and behave in a similar way. The 90/10 rule asks how often you promote. Reddit's new detection, as reported, asks something else: do your accounts act together in a way that truly separate accounts would not?

The answer is the one [the traffic guide](https://aiofmcity.com/guides/traffic-and-platform-policy#reddit-is-two-different-jobs) gives: run the accounts separately. The main reason is Reddit's own rules: voting on your own posts from a second account and coordinated promotion count as vote manipulation and spam. Separately means no voting on each other's posts, no promoting each other, and no shared links posted within minutes of each other. Accounts that run in the same sitting and promote each other are doing exactly that coordinated promotion.

## Three things to do before posting

1. **Say it is AI, in your own words, wherever the content is generated.** This is the one rule Reddit enforces everywhere. A tag, a flair or a line in the post is enough.
2. **Read the rules of the subreddit before you post there.** There is no single document with "Reddit's rules" on self-promotion. The sidebar of the subreddit is the rule, and it is different in every community.
3. **Keep the two accounts separate in how they behave, and not only in name.** Do not vote on each other's posts. Do not cross-promote. Reddit treats accounts that move together as coordinated, and coordinated promotion breaks its rules.

Keeping the operator account and the persona account apart is a topic of its own. [Traffic and platform policy](https://aiofmcity.com/guides/traffic-and-platform-policy) covers it in full. The other two traffic sources have their own label rules. ## Frequently asked

### Is there a real 90/10 rule on Reddit for self-promotion?

Reddit itself does not state one, as far as this site could find. Many marketing blogs repeat the rule, but no Reddit help page or policy document gives a numeric ratio. In practice, moderators decide in each subreddit. Reddit also bans, site-wide, content that misrepresents what it is.

### Does Reddit allow AI-generated content?

Yes, site-wide, as long as you follow each community’s own rules. Reddit’s help centre says AI content is allowed "subject to each community’s specific rules". One thing is banned everywhere: AI content that "presents itself as human-generated."

### Is there a Reddit-wide AI content label?

No. Instagram and TikTok have an AI label, but Reddit has no platform-wide AI toggle or badge. If a subreddit wants you to say it is AI, you do it in your own words: a tag in the title, a flair, or a line in the post.

### What does Reddit watch for now?

As of July 2026, Reddit says it uses LLMs to catch "highly subtle, coordinated patterns of fake behavior". That describes running a promotional account next to a persona account much better than any self-promotion ratio does.
